Welcome to a new Easy Exposure Photo Forum! I hope you will enjoy new features. It is still work in progress, so please be patients. Thanks!
In this section I would like to hear your opinion about the rules, you think we should have on this forum.
The hot topic at the moment is:
Can we edit other people’s photos posted in this forum with learning purpose to help others to improve their image? (Keep in mind, edited photos can only be reposted in this forum).
This is what Fair Use Law says:
“the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.”
Please take a moment to vote in this poll and also voice your opinion in comments below.
Can we edit other member's photos?
- Yes, but we have to ask first
- No, not at all
- Yes, unless it says "don't edit"
- Yes

I notice that a few members have watermarks in their pics which seem to indicate copyright anyway.
I believe that it is good form to ask first, then manipulate to your hearts content or take photo, manipulate it
then ask the member if it is alright to post back.
Personally, if someone wants to change my photo for the better good on them, so long as they tell me exactly
what they did to make it better so I can gain more knowledge.

First, I agree, I don’t think it breaks any copyright laws to change a photo for the sole purpose of showing another member of the forum something… I guess a lot depends on the purpose of the forum… if it is to learn from each other then there shouldn’t be an issue. This is why I voted yes unless the individual states “don’t edit”. I only post pictures I think were pretty good in the first place and am looking for comments and feedback on how to become better. Part of that may be in post production. I don’t know about others, but I have a lot to learn about post production. The worse that would happen is that someone edits your photo and you don’t like it. But it may still highlight some edit that you had not known or haven’t used.
All that to say the forum is focused on learning and getting better… my vote is that we can edit each other’s photos for the sole purpose of reposting them on this site unless the owner of the photo states not to edit.

I dont agree in editing other members photos. Even if they are watermarked…that means the photo is edited as it is and not with other person editing authorship. So, if someone ASK to edit their photos for learning proposes ok. If that person DONT ASK for other person to edit their photo…I don’t see any point for that person to do that on his own free will.
I will not post any phrase telling “please don’t edit my photo” but if someone wants to edit it, they need to ASK me first, even for non comercial use. That is my rule, independent of the voting results.

All images are automatically copy righted to the creator the instant it is created.
Fair Use Law applies to the use of the original work, not the modification of a copyrighted work.
I personally have no problem with people using my images to help us all learn, but I would expect to be asked first.
As I always would.
I have missed out on some really cool edits because the OP never responded. Oh well, their image, they can do (or not do) what they want with it.
I have seen posts that explicitly ask for people to edit and re-post with a description of the steps taken, that is all I need.
Now that we are on the subject, maybe we can have a section for doing just this. Upload an image that you would like to see hjow others would process it. 🙂

Jeannie… I think that this is an excellent idea. Perhaps it could be expanded to include a list of members who would not take any objection to others downloading any of their already posted photos and editing them for constructive purposes.
Let me be the first to add my name to such a list.

You are reading my mind! I just wanted to send everybody an email about this. Every week or so we can have 1 image (mine or anybody’s, who want to submit one) for editing. It would be so much fun to see how different people can interpret the same image.
I would say we should have no limits: it can be simple basic edition, turning into B&W, sepia, special effects, composite, reattaching.
Just please don’t submit any images you are too sensitive about, because you never know the outcome, lol!
It also much easier to edit Raw images or at least larger Jpeg. I need to figure out the way how you can submit and download larger files. Then after edit, you can post them resized on the forum in Edit section. What do you think about that?

Great idea, we could a service such as https://www.dropbox.com/ to upload the files to.
Then edit to our hearts content and upload the jpeg to the forum.
This could be a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

My personal feeling is:
I’m on a life long learning quest to see how I can improve my photographic
skills. I welcome constructive criticism and appreciate
others opinions about my efforts. If someone wants to alter an image I have
posted go ahead as I have the original. The objection would be to alter an image
and reproduce it for financial gain – then the game changes! Anyone who attempted
to do this would be in severe violation of the law as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve been a member of easyexposure for quite some time now and I have had the
opportunity to view many remarkable images by our members.
Lets keep easyexposure a growing and friendly community with the intention of
advancing the skills of our already talented membership!
Peace to you all and keep taking those remarkable photographs for us to enjoy!!!
Dale.

I completely agree and there is no wiggle room on this.

Any progress with this, Oksana?
I think it would be a really interesting exercise.

I will try to set everything up this week.
Here you have it a new section – Photo Edit.
Please follow the link to the first weekly edit. At the moment I decided to do it every two weeks, so everybody has time to edit.

This one is DNG life, but you can also submit your jpegs for edit here:

Here are my thoughts, scattered as they are:
If a person adamantly does not want his/her photos to be edited in any way, just say so.
But I think the best policy would be to grant permission. As in ‘Here is a picture I did, how do I do this effect’ and let the other members edit it to provide examples, etc.
This is such a rich learning environment here, where we can all help each other, and sometimes the best way to do so is to edit an image to demonstrate how something will look when certain adjustments are made.
