I am doing a photography project for my own enjoyment. I will be doing one roll of film a week; black and white Ilford Delta Pro, Voigtlander Brilliant TLR and developing myself.
My intention is to do this for 52 weeks, and at the end take the best of the best of them and printing them out in a nice book (probably using Blurb).
I don’t have a specific theme per se, but I plan on just taking pictures of stuff around Hamilton that interests me. Hamilton does have a lot of really neat things to photograph, and many are things that people just walk past without a second glance. So that is my plan.
Also, each week I will post the best 2 shots from each roll and update this thread.
On that note, here are the best from Week 1 (never mind the fingerprints haha)

This really does sound like an exciting project.
I’m sure it would improve anyone’s photography and film developing skills.
I certainly look forward to seeing your results.
“Hamilton (not the President)” might be a possible title for your book.
Will there be post processing involved… and are you going with chemical post… that’s something.
I did a bit of film development in the army when I palled around with our Battalion (56th Medical Battalion) photographer in Germany.
It was always a lot of fun until somebody opened the darkroom door despite the lit red light on the outside.
I assume that you have your own darkroom. Sure brings back the days.

I have a development bag. In the bag I unroll the film, wind it onto the spindle and then put the spindle in the development tank. After that I can do everything else in the light.
The tank: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/…..h_Two.html
The bag: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/…..TP125.html
I like the title…I will keep that in mind
This is the third roll I have developed. The first one took 1.5 hours to get the film on the spindle. The second one took over 2 hours, and was so badly scratched the pictures were unusable. Only took about 5 minutes for the third roll and other than a few fingerprints, the process went perfectly. It really is quite exciting.

I remember (1964) that we (sometimes me) used a huge Press Camera. Pity I don’t remember the name, but similar to below.
The darkroom was quite elaborate (admittedly at Government expense).
I can remember several machines including one or two “enlargers” which we used to make the 8X10s.

Great project, Brian! Those really have a feeling like they were taken back in the days. It is very exiting to see how you will progress and what new subjects you come up with.
“Hamilton (not the President)” – sound cool, Mandrake.
I use to do a lot of development in photography school as well as printing in the darkroom. I did cry a few times, lol. Learned some lessons not to share chemicals with 1 year students. You will get better in getting the film on the spindle, the more you do it.

Got excited and did Week 2 already.
First image is of Tiffany Falls in Hamilton. The trail leading to the falls was thick and slippery ice. I feel twice and the cameras went flying. No damage though. It was worth it for this picture. The falls were loud, and misty and just wonderful!
The second image is of Jodi looking out our front window. I told her to look like she was thinking of something. Later she just said ‘I can’t believe it’s not butter’.
Very cool Brian! Did you use the same film for those? It has a different feel to it. Less contrasty. But it works, especially for the image of Jodi! I love it. It tells the story and makes the viewer wander of what she is thinking about? Does she wait for somebody? Or did she see something outside? Nice composition – use of square frame and rule of thirds. Viewer eye goes directly to her face.

It was Ilford Delta Pro 400, but I suspect that the developer was too cold, so the film wasn’t finishing ‘cooking’ yet. I am going to get a thermometer today to ensure I am a little more accurate.
Thank you for the compliment about the picture of Jodi. I am really proud of that one. She said she was thinking ‘I can’t believe its not butter’, but I like to go with your ideas as they are more mysterious haha. The film is 6×6 medium format, and to be honest I really like the square format.

Just for fun, I used Google’s Street View to see if I could figure out where Brian
was standing when he took these first two photos.
My red arrows in the Street View photos below show where I think he was.
You found me. haha. Great job. I have lots of ideas for more pictures from around the city, I will see if you can find me. It is like long distance hide and seek

Sounds like great fun. I’m looking forward to it.
(I know… I’ve much too much time on my hands. LOL)
Dale… Mandrake takes a bow.

Week 3 is up. I realized my last roll that the water was too cold so the film wasn’t developing long enough. So I used warmer water, and bought a thermometer. However, the thermometer battery died and the water was a little too warm. Pictures came out nice though.
Mandrake…see if you can figure out where they are from. One I will give a hint on…the parking lot was seen in the movie Kick Ass.
Also, I made a graphical watermark for fun. Not sure I will keep it, but I will use it for now.

Brian… Really liking this set, especially the first and last which give a real sense of the environment.
This project is going to be something when you finish. Please do not falter in your resolve.
Your first shot is at 43 King Willilam Street, where The Flavour of Himalaya Restaurant is located.
Here’s a link to the street view with shows the bench and buildings and includes the menu of Indian fare available at Himalaya.
Also at the address are the Baltimore House and the Sanctuary Cafe & Tea Room. Both of these places appear quite inviting.
Your second shot is the parking lot of The Capri Restaurant, 25 John St N, in Hamilton.
The parking lot is off of King William Street around the corner.
Your last two shots are of the same building, not far from the Capri.
Here’s a street view of that location on Hughson Street N, just off of King William Street.
This location was the hardest to find. I had to do a virtual drive around the neighborhood before I came upon the building.
It’s interesting that so far two of your photos include Landmark Place, which as you must know, is the tallest building in Hamilton.

You’re really doing a commendable job tracking our friend Brian’s whereabouts and locations.
I think we can have a group vote and all agree that…yes Mandrake, you do seem to have a
lot of free time at your disposal. I’m sure you put it to good use though and as I’ve stated before –
we always look forward to your input.
I would love to retire but that aint happening yet unfortunately so I do what I can to take pictures
and try and keep up with the group here at easy exposure. As you can see by my posts – most of
my “free time” is when normal people are still sleeping lol!
Dale.
