I was walking around in Perpignan, France when I came across this quite colorful site. I only had a 50mm lens with me and I went as far back as I could but I felt that I captured the essence of what I saw.
A bit odd as the cactus growing out of the window was quite large and something that you wouldn´t expect to see in France.

Canon 450d
Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens
Focal Length 50mm
Aperture f/4
ISO 200
Shutter Speed 1/200 second

My only concern with this shot is that it’s too busy. I don’t know what the focus of interest was in the picture.

I was trying to show a cultural contrast that in France (associated as a cold, cloudy and rainy country) I found a large cactus (associated with dry, sun, heat) growing and thriving here. I also like the contrast of colors, so for me I think the composition works, but I can understand the confusion if you aren’t aware of the culture differences as between France and Spain there are the Pyraneese Mountains so completely different weather.

The photo really does force you to look back and forth between the two subjects. I’m not really sure that is a bad thing as it is obvious that you are meant to compare. Not knowing the localities, however, confuses me as to what I am supposed to be comparing.

When I first looked the picture I thought the cactus was a plastic fake or a blow up one.
To be honest I l would have liked it better without the cactus as I like wild colors everywhere.

I actually like the picture as it is. It is very bold and grafic. Great color contrast and all colors compliment each other. Two windows and the balcony create a triangle which makes your eye wander around the picture, which is a good thing in this case for me. Usage of rule of third works for me too.

Pretty sure the cactus was real but again it was a bit out of place, wish I would have brought a wider lens with me to capture more of the buildings.

Thanks Oksana for your comments!
