We will watch a baskatball game this sunday.

What is you suggestion shutter speed to use in sports (basket ball)?

What I know:
Balance: Aperture Shutter Speed ISO.
Rule of thumb: Shutter Speed = 1/focal lenght

Situations (assume):

150mm ED VR(on) aperture and ISO is already set.. what is your suggested shutter speed? (my idea = 1/200)
200mm ED VR(on) aperture and ISO is already set.. what is your suggested shutter speed? (my idea = 1/250)
300mm ED VR(on) aperture and ISO is already set.. what is your suggested shutter speed? (my idea = 1/320 or 1/400)

Thank you..

Thank you.

Best regards,

I would think that you would need at least 1/400 and more than likely 1/500.  I included a picture of my son playing soccer with a shot at 1/400 (f5.6) and the players are in focus but the ball is blurry.  I would think the ball in basket ball moves faster than a header in soccer…  I’d adjust ISO to make up for the increased shutter speed…

I will also play with my shutter speed (hopefully more available light is present)..

Shutter speed is a no problem if there will be a lot of avaible light..

I notice in your case, I assume it is morning around 10:00am to 3pm… so you could use the sunny16 rule..

In my case it is an indoor game and I hope for more light..

Thanks for the comment and sample photo..

Thank you.

Sample Photos taking during the game… I used shutter speed 1/500, ISO 100 – 2000 (depending on the light) and playing with my aperture 5.6~9 :)

Some great action shots.  I like the first one the best.

The third shot is, in my opinion, the winner.

The crowd is finding much humor at the expense of #10 and
no less than three photographers have caught this player’s misfortune.
