Canon20D
18-55mm 3.5-5.6
1/30
f 5.0
400 ISO
External Speedlight Flash used for fill light (Output set to -2)
RAW

It was a very bright day so I had him stand in front of a large window to blow the background out to solid white and have him fade out into the haze with the focus on his new daughter. Converted to BW in Photoshop, most editing was done in Lightroom 4, just basic stuff like contrast adjustments. I wasn’t paying as close attention to my framing as I should have been and cut her toes off.

His daughter is new in his life and taking precedence over his life and the focus is becoming less on him and more on her. Having him fade into the background and keeping her sharp and contrasted represents this life transition for him.

Nice idea, but I think most people looking at the photo would not understand this without an explanation as you’ve given.
Most would just think that the photo did not come out very well.

I think I may have played around in post processing and tried to shadow
the father’s face. The first impression I got what – the highlights really got blown
out.
I understand (after your explanation) what you were attempting to achieve.
Dale.
The bright backlighting really made this shot almost impossible without using additional
lighting.
Good effort!
Dale.

This is actually one of more popular and liked photographs for people following my page. If I wanted the fathers face clearer you could sipped up the shutter 2 or so stops and bump the flash output from -2. I can remember, if I have your name right I imagine you already know that from what I’ve seen of your work.
