I would love to see the coloured version of this photo. It must be great.

Take the camera off of Spot Metering, Erwin. Use Matrix as your default. Spot should be used if only a very small portion of the photo is important for light value, such as a dancer lit with a spotlight on an otherwise darkened stage. Experiment with your camera, taking the same photo, but changing the type of metering.

I like her expression. She’s probably upset with you for chopping off her head and chin.

hehehe she’s mad at me coz she’s impatient and I usually take several photos of her before I let her do her things. I chopped her head coz the sun is just too strong over her heard and my sync speed with built-in flash is 1/200 only. Thanks I’ll try using matrix metering.

Erwin… I know what you mean. I’ve had the same problem with my granddaughter. Here’s one of her…. upset with me for the same reason. Women – You gotta love em!

Mandrake: Spot Metering is not a bad choice for portraiture, since the most important part is the face and usually you want to expose for face. Caucasian skin is very close to Middle Grey, so if you meter the skin with your spot meter you should get good results. The other case are people with darker skin. If you meter of the darker skin, there is a great chance that they will be overexposed, since camera will try to even them out to middle grey and ad more light. In this case you want to use exposure compensation.

But I know how it is with kids they are moving super fast, so matrix metering can make your life a bit easier.

There is nothing wrong with cropping the head and the chin sometimes. I think it works for this photo, since it is all about the eyes. I just wander how it will look in color or with more contrast. I looks kind of flat to me.

Oksana… I’ve done some research and I stand corrected. It all gets a bit complicated, but below is a link for spot metering with the Nikon cameras. I’ll be giving it a try with portraits.

Hi Oksana thanks, what I am trying to achieve is a dreamy effect with thre rest of the image with her eyes being the sharpest and contrasty, but I guess my flash was overpowered by the sun and I did not achieve contrasty effect on her face.

And Mandrake you got a colourful photo of your granddaughter
