I was lucky enough to get a pass to board one of our four
submarines. They are not new, they are not nuclear, and they
cost a lot to maintain. The lighting is bad, the sleeping conditions
are ridiculous and the toilets (heads/sink areas) are not much bigger
than a large closet. Hopefully these few pics will give some idea of what
conditions are like for those who choose this as a career.
The 5th pic shows the periscope and the last pic was taken looking from
the front cap of a torpedo (blue/grey object on left). I took a lot of shots
and this is a small sampling of what we saw.

Glad that you guys liked the pics. Life aboard a submarine
must be hard to get used to – so cramped and so many things
to hit your damned head on if you’re not careful. All of us in my
group of visitors came away wishing they would have passed out
hard hats!!! Yes Mandrake we do have submarines up here – we bought
four from the British and spent a ton of cash refurbishing them.
Apparently for every 18 months of active duty, 6 months of refit time is recommended
for repairs and maintenance, and that maintenance is very costly.
Dale.
