Muneer – Here is a picture of an Atlas Moth.

The person’s hand is partially visible and the

moth is clinging to a cocoon.

I would estimate that this moth has a wingspan of at

least 9 or 10 inches and it is a normal sized specimen.

Apparently they can have larger wingspans and they are

impressive to actually look at close up.

The cocoon is cigar shaped and about 4 or so inches long.

A real shame that they live such a short time as an adult

moth.

Is this the same “moth or butterfly” that you were referring to?

A damned big bird lol!

These things are enormous as far as moths go and you

have to see them to appreciate the size.

Apparently the “head” at the tip of each wing is supposed to

resemble a snakes head and scare would be predators away.

Pretty ingenious adaptation.

Dale.

Dale… Yes, I can see the resemblance to a snake’s head.
I wonder if it really works.

mscharff –

Don’t let the Japanese know this thing exists because if they

haven’t made a movie about it they might lol!

Mandrake – Don’t know if it works but thinking about it, given

the fact that these moths only live a few days I don’t know if

a snake would even find one before the thing died of “old age”!

I guess that while they are alive the adaptation probably fools some

would be predators though.

Dale.
