What were you settling for a smoke picture? I would say your shatter speed should be fast enough to freeze it. Black background is a good choice. Also it depends on the smoke itself. What are you using to create smog. I remember when I was in photography school and we were taking pictures of food with smoke coming out, we used wet tampon microwaved to create a smog. We thought our teacher was crazy but I worked, so it didn’t last too long.
