This is an old 8X10 large format camera that a husband and wife were taking pictures with in the park.
I was told that the lens alone weighs about 5 pounds. Check out the homemade wooden shutter being
held in place by a stick lol! I spent a lot of time admiring this old camera and came away with a real respect
for the photographers who produced some incredible images with these cameras from the past.
PS – Manfrotto head attached to old wooden tripod.

Fascinating.
I would love to see the photographs
that they were able to capture with this relic.
If you really, really want one, Dale…

I didn’t actually see any photographs but if you look up large format
on Flickr there are a number of posts available.
I got a chance to look at the screen and it is quite a sight to see a large
upside down and backwards image displayed at such a size! I was told
that the camera can produce very high quality images and those images
can be enlarged with no appreciable loss to quality. I was impressed by
watching the owner going through all the steps necessary to actually take
a picture. They told me that they have not used digital cameras in over a year
and don’t think they’ll ever go back to digital now. By the way, where we can go
out and take a few hundred shots in a day digitally – they go out and take maybe
10 or 15 shots in the same amount of time. You have to be dedicated to spend that
much time on a single image – and I was told that they’re not all keepers!!!

Dale… Thanks for the added information. Quite interesting.
It’s a bit of an effort for me to walk far with my 5100.
This monster might be just a tiny bit too heavy for me.
Below is a shot of an Eastman Kodak view camera that I took at the Aviation Museum.
Why it was included as an exhibit…. I have no idea.
I think the camera’s label is missing in the shots that you have taken…. Perhaps it is Kodak as well?
Click on image for higher resolution and again for camera details.

This looks like 8×10 camera. I took a product photography class where we had to use 4×5. Kind of similar, just smaller. It is fun and pain on the ass at the same time, lol. The main thing about this cameras is that you can correct distortions right in the camera. They use to use them for architecture and product photography a lot. You load the camera with one sheet on film at a time and yes, there are a few steps to take, before you take a picture. If you forgot or miscalculate something, toooooo bad.
On the picture, I am shooting a little black maglite with macro lens.

Mandrake & Oksana
I had a couple of shots with the partial name of the camera and
unfortunately I deleted them (I have too many pics on my harddrive).
It wasn’t Kodak but if I do see the couple again in the park one day I
will definitely find out and post the name of the camera. Those large
frame cameras are monsters and I don’t think too many people hoist
them up to take action shots of herons landing in trees lol! Besides – the
frame rate really sucks (no 6 or 8 fps on these models).
Oksana – You are definitely much more photogenic than the guy I was talking
to in the park (he’s the one under the coat taking a shot of his wife who was
sitting on a bench at the time). And yes, those cameras are strictly manual everything!
But they are so interesting and a huge part of photographic history.
Dale.
