Visiting my in laws I took advantage that my nephew was there to test my portrait skills. Sorry so many pictures but I hoped this would give more content to critique. Since I don’t yet have a specific style, any all comments or suggestions are welcome.

I’m liking the last two the best.
You’re breaking a rule by chopping a bit off of your subject, but, for some reason…. it works.
Great expressions. A cute kid.

Style… Some seem to develop one, others… not so much.
It’s great if you do. I think you will.
I wouldn’t force it.
It will come as a surprise to you when you see it.

hi
as Mandrake said, last two are best. For me, a bit underexposed, bit blurry background is not distracting as on two first ones. I think the second it worst of this set. The light is set on background while face is cover in shadow.
But this is just my opinion. :-)
Best regards
B.S.E.

Thanks for the comments and critique guys. Smile
Mandrake the cutting off of part of his head was not done on purpose so I’m glad that you mention that. That is exactly the type of critique I’m looking for. But also your comment lets me know that sometimes rules can be broken.
B.S.E I agree they are a bit underexposed it was a weird day where clouds were passing by so it would be bright one second then darker the next. So I guess I have to get better at adjusting to the situation. Also with the shadow on the face, I guess I was trying to add a little character to the picture but I guess it wasn’t a good idea. Also, I really wanted to capture his entire body but to do with the lens I have (18-55mm) I had to back up and I could not get the effect of the blurred background that I wanted because it just seemed the lowest F stop was not low enough to allow me to achieve this. So I either need to upgrade my lens or get more practice.
Thanks again this really helps. Smile

:D
Perhaps I’m a bit critical to others, if some one felt offended, I’m sorry.
I’m even more critical to myself, so forgive me Mandrake, but you have to wait some time to see my photos.
As for now, none of mine photos passed thru my intern mode.

B.S.E. I welcome your comments. I would never consider someone else’s opinion law, but if I take everyone’s critique and opinion into consideration that should make me a better photographer. Please don’t hold back, I won’t get offended. But like Mandrake I also would like to see some of your photo’s. I’m sure they’re just fine. Nothing to prove here.

Thanks intekhab0731 I also like that picture. This kid is a character, that picture was at the end when I just said do whatever and he started doing all sorts of things. I hope in the future if I am able to have clients, that their kids are as fun to work with.

Sometimes they are and sometimes they are not. A few days ago I had 15 month old boy in my studio. He was so out of control. Doesn’t matter what you do. He just want to run. I took 4 adults to at least keep him in the area with the lights.

Laugh That is funny. I can imagine it must be difficult sometimes. I guess that’s when your skills get tested of how fast you can set the correct settings, that’s one point where I still have a lot to learn.
