So…. This is a new camera for you.
It is always exciting to learn a new piece of equipment.

I wish you good luck with the D5100… As you may know, it is the camera I use
and I am most pleased with it.  The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens although, as with any
prime, you have to work a bit more to get the composition you want.

These photos have shallow dof.  Are they at the wide open 1.8 setting?
Perhaps a higher aperture would bring a bit more of the plants into focus.

The last photo makes a good “souvenir” of your first use of the camera.  I would flip it horizontally.
The D5100 looks unusually small in your hands.  I’m guessing you have large hands.  lol

Again… I wish you the best with the camera.

Mandrake,

I’m so pleased with the camera and really impressed with its image quality…

I’m using manual mode with a prime that has no focus mortar in it.. so have to turn that “not so smooth”

focus ring manually too… its a heck of a task getting the focus, exposure and other things right – but I’m glad that I’m

responsible for almost all bit of details/results it brings out… :)

Yes..could have stepped down the aperture so that more details on the leaves would be visible..glad you point that out…

advices welcome as always….

I was using a mirror in a mortar cycle for the last shot, tried to focus on the “Nikon” logo and the camera model

label… :D   .. a souvenir indeed.

Cheerzz..

Praveen.

Praveen
Very nice shots for someone who is just beginning to use a DSLR.
You have a great camera with the Nikon D5100 and using a prime lens
is also a good idea as they do produce very sharp images.
I think you will become very good very fast if these are your first images!
My first images were really bad lol. Out of focus, over and under exposed,
terrible framing etc. You name it – I did it wrong but I hung in there and now
it’s easier to get acceptable images.
You’re doing great and I hope you love photography as much as we all do because
it really is a great hobby!

Dale. A fellow Nikon owner.Smile

Taking a photo of an image in a mirror poses (no pun intended) an interesting question.

When you look In a mirror everything is in focus, both near and far objects.
To take the same image with a camera, but not using a mirror, you would need
a small aperture opening to achieve a wide depth of field to get everything in focus.

BUT…. I would suspect if you are taking the photo as you did… taking a photo of the reflection…
then everything would be on the same plane as the glass of the mirror and a very wide aperture (even f/1.8)
would get both very near and very far objects in focus.

Addendum:  I took the time to look in a mirror to see if in fact both a near object and a far object would be in focus.
The answer is yes and no.  The object that you are looking at is clear, but the other is not.
If you change and look at the other object then it becomes clear and the first object is not.

Interestingly, you have to “focus” on the object in the mirror that you wish to see clearly.
This, despite the fact that the reflection of all objects in the mirror are the same distance away.

It must be the same using a camera as Praveen has. He focused on the word “Nikon”
Note that his ear, a distance away, is not as clear as “Nikon”.
