I’m a very beginner, and I just got my first 50mm. I welcome constructive criticism to help me learn! BTW I love these lessons – such a wonderful teacher!!IMG_1384.JPG

Nice shot… It’s best when photos can tell a story and this one does.
Obviously brothers, not paying any attention to the photographer and totally engrossed
in whatever they are holding… pine cones and… I can’t tell what else.

Very good exposure with virtually no clipping (I checked the histogram).

I like the composition, but wish the background was more neutral.
The unrelated objects and activity are a bit distracting.
Give some thought to backgrounds when shooting.
I totally understand that this is not possible when an opportunity
needs to be captured as it happens. This photo may well be one of those times.

Cute kids… I am sure they will enjoy your work when they are older.

Cool thank you! Thanks for checking the histogram. How do you do that when it’s not on your camera?? Also, can you tell me what clipping means? I know it’s bad if all the data is piled up on the very edge of the histogram, but is it ok if the data is spread throughout the histogram but also touches the edges? Is the data never suppose to touch the edges?
I agree that the background is a little distracting. I was trying to hurry on this on and also afraid if I made the aperture too low it wouldn’t focus on one of them?? My husband kept talking to me,and I kept telling him to be quiet so I could catch the shot, lol!

I guess if I made the aperture bigger it would’ve still focused on both of them since they are standing at the same distancel, right?

Great shot – the little guy is hilarious with that cute laugh
and the big guy is already copping a “I’m too cool” attitude
with the shades.
Background a little distracting but love the candid look to it.
Dale.

I downloaded the forum image file and opened it in Lightroom. From there you can see the histogram.
Opening the aperture will reduce your depth of field meaning less of the photo will be in focus.
But…. If the children are the same distance from the lens, they will be equally in focus.

You had expressed an interest in purchasing Lightroom in another post.
Version 5.0 (beta) is now available for free until it is released for sale.
The expected release date is 6/30, so you will have some time to play with it.
I wouldn’t buy the latest 4.4 version as 5.0 has very significant improvements.

Here is the download site for the 5.0 beta.
