I would try and avoid shooting in direct sun light.

The photo is really good capture of the moment of friends having a good time, the composition is fine as well.

The big problem is, there is no details in their eyes because of really hard shadows and hot spots on the faces.

Try looking for an open shade if you have to shoot in the mid day sun.

No, I didn’t crop this… this was “as taken”.  I do need to get in the habit of stepping back and capturing more image than I think I need when I’m taking the shot as it is easier to take away than add what you don’t have :-)
