I like film as I started by using a Pentax film camera.
I was talking to a retired gentleman yesterday who has
a large collection of film cameras but he can’t get film
developed in Victoria any more. Everything here is digital
now so on the rare occasion he does take some photos on
film he has to send it away for processing.
It’s a shame but I guess it’s something we have to live with.
Thanks for sharing these with us.
Dale.

Film is very expensive.
For example, a good roll of film will cost you 10 bucks a roll. Then to get them developed it is about 8 dollars just to negative.
So with taxes and commercials, it is about 20 dollars per roll of film. Or about 75 cents per picture. You have to make the shots count.
Digital offers the advantage where you can just keep taking pictures. Hundreds in fact at a time. And if you don’t like them…delete them. If it is over exposed, take another.
With film you don’t have that advantage.
These pictures were from the ‘test’ phase. I just wanted to know if the camera worked and how well. Despite needing a cleaning inside, it does a rather splendid job (in my opinion). What I do is use my digital, take pictures, and if something remarkable stands out, I will take a shot or two with the film. I also find I spend more time composing a picture, taking time with settings. Helps the learning process.
I love film. It has special look and feel. But you are right it is expensive and time-consuming.
But it is good to learn with film, it makes you think, because you don’t want to waist it. Not too much room for mistakes.
When i was at photography school, we had to shoot with film a lot. Different kind – 35mm, medium format and even 4×5. It was always a surprise what you are going to get. We prayed every time before developing it, lol. Ones I also put my film is a bad chemicals (we used them together with first year students, who messed it up) and all my film come out empty and blue .
I love film and think it would be a sad if it were to disappear. There is still an argument as to which is better. I think the quality is great and you can get different feels depending on what make and type of film you use.
Even in cine film like super8 is great I think although it isn’t technically great you get a feel and look you can’t get from anything else.
I think it would be a shame if these things disappear as if they did we wouldn’t have as much artistic ability to choose what would be best for our subject.
