The first picture was taken from Mott Street which is the main street in Chinatown.  The second picture looks like a place in Europe.  Indeed, it is the main entrance to Manhattan Bridge which connects Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Besides China Town is a little crooked (which is fixable), it is a great image.I love the color, a bit of HDR works great as well. I also like bursts of light. 
Great image is the bridge as well. Nice leading lines and texture. Of center composition worlds as well.

Thanks for all of your comments.  When I took the first picture, I used those two pedestrians (horizontal to the bottom edge) and the Chinese sign (vertical to left edge) on the left hand side as base points.   I will pay more attention to the crook issue in the future.
