Hello my name is Marianne and I just recently started learning photography on my own. I am really glad I found this forum because it allows me to ask questions. So here is my question. I hope you’ll be able to provide an answer for me. So far I was shooting without flash and only now decided to shoot using hot shoe flash. But I don’t quite understand how to get the correct exposure when using flash. Are we going to have two apertures – one for the camera and one for the flash, two ISO’s – one for the camera and one for the flash and two shutter speeds – one for the camera and one for the flash or are we going to have just one aperture, ISO and shutter speed? So how does it work? And how the correct exposure is calculated with different flash modes? So please help me out. Thank you very much, Marianne.

Hi Marianne! Welcome to the forum. Sorry for late reply. First of all did you watch my video about flash?
Please let me know if it cleared some things out and it you still have any question.

Nice video Oksana. I’ve been struggling with off-camera flash for a few years now. I am a chronic note taker and am constantly revising them.

But i think i have it all down pretty good now. The only problem that will never change though is that i use manual off camera flash. I cannont afford or maybe it was that TTL off camera flash wizards weren’t compatable with my units.

I understand alot use manual though. I don’t use a light meter either. If i did, it would make taking on the spur of moment photos way too long. They are impatient as it is when i have to take more than one photo with flash. I know it’ll be somewhere around 1/4 to full power in daylight ballpark figure to start with.

Indoors, i have decided i won’t need any off camera flash and i’ll just use TTL on camera from now on. I have to be more systematic or it’ll quickly become overwhelming again as it has been for so long. I’d like to see a Topic on using flash indoors/out.

And your advice on it.
