As Oksana said - if you want a great all purpose lens go

with the 35mm 1.8, or the 50mm. Two really nice lenses

that don't break the bank to purchase. If you really really

want a macro be prepared to dig a little deeper and buy a

longer one (again stated by Oksana). A 40mm is probably

going to leave you frustrated sometimes by it's inability to

get the neat closeup shots without being very close to do it.

Again - good luck with your decision...Dale.

I would say that 40mm is not the best lens for macro. As nikonguy said it is too short and you will need to be very close to the subject. It is more all purpose lens with macro ability. If you need more of the all purpose lens instead of macro, I would probably go with 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 (better for portraits) which have wider apertures.

Sam

I have read that it is preferable to get a larger macro like 60mm or

even a 105 or 180mm so you don't have to be so close to the subject.

I know that when you get to those sizes your wallet is going to take

a big hit but if you got a 40mm would you really use it much?

I find that using a 35mm or even the 18-55mm kit lens if you take the

time to frame your subject properly and do some cropping in post processing

you can achieve the same effect as using a macro lens. I always suggest

taking the time to talk to someone who is in the business of selling lenses and

gear. Hopefully they will be honest and give you some good advice.

Good luck...Dale.

I just looked through Nikkor 40mm 2.8g Micro lens online and watched the reviews on youtube..

It seems that they say this lens could be replaced by both the standard prime lenses i.e. 35mm 1.8g as well as 50mm 1.8g.

I am really confused now..as this lens is capable of having great sharpness and it can do micro…

Shed some light on this confusion…
