No flash used. The natural lighting from the sun created this effect.

Plus a little manipulation in LR to add highlights and darken where I thought

necessary.

Creating images like this is really quite easy - just play around with the settings

on your camera, adjust for the highlights to darken the background and look for

the sunlight shining through something that you think would make an interesting

picture.

That's all there is to it and I hope you can go out and create some shots that

amaze you!

Thanks for the positive feedback mscharff.

This shot of the yellow flower was taken on a very sunny

day in a relatively shady area with strong backlighting (on the flower)

I chose spot metering and metered on the flower only for recommended settings. Camera indicated: ISO 100 @ 40mm with an

f stop of 6.3 @ 1/400th of a second.

Then I just took the raw image and tweaked it a little in LR to get this

result.

Hope that answered your question.

Thanks for the comments Mandrake.

As far as I know the houseboats are strictly owner occupied

BUT I could easily be wrong. To live in one of these you would

definitely have to be people oriented as literally thousands of people

are at Fisherman's Wharf every day in the summer. From the owners

I have spoken to from time to time, they enjoy the lifestyle and the

interaction with the locals and tourists.

The yellow flower looks pretty cool as a full blown tiff at high resolution

so I might get it printed and framed with a nice matt border to highlight it.

The whale watching boat isn't quite as menacing as it looks - I took the shot

from a low angle to over emphasize the black and yellow bow. I think a 70 or 80

foot whale would have no problem with this motorized, floating piece of tourist

laden rubber ambling by. The clicks of the many cameras would most likely be more

distracting to it!

Dale.

The yellow flower is particularly beautiful.

The whale watching boat looks like it could do major damage to any whale in it's way.
