You achieved the same effect using Lightroom and PSE10.
I like to use it when you want to emphasize the main subject
and can get away with it. Your picture hit the nail on the head
with emphasis on the bright flower and leaves.

I figured you would be able to create some
really great effects and I'm not surprised that
you can create the "bright on dark" stuff like
I posted. I would really like to try Photoshop one
day but, but, as one of my sons jokingly told me
once - K.I.S.S. you would never figure it out.
He's probably right too lol!

Now that I think of it, I did get the effect, to a lesser degree, with some of my Rose of Sharon photos.
Now I know why.

Thank you deensani - I used a Canon Rebel xsi with
a 70-300 telephoto zoomed approximately 1/2 way out
ISO 100 and around f8 @ 1/500sec.
Then I did some post manipulation in Lightroom 4 by lowering
the exposure compensation value and boosting the point curve
setting from original (linear) to strong. I also played around with
some of the other settings in Lightroom but I tried to keep the
manipulation to a minimal. As I mentioned to my buddy Mandrake
you have to have a fairly clean (no bright objects) and subdued
background and then everything comes together - usually lol. So
have fun and hope it works for everyone who wants some drama
in their pics.

You have to start with a subdued background
otherwise you will never get it as dark as I did.
Believe me though there is no way I could or would
use Lightroom to go over every square cm and attempt
to black out between petals etc.
I will see if I can take some "before and after" pics to
show the difference. Wish it was better weather here -
rain, wind and cold temps. with not much of interest to
try and take pics of.
I will see what I can do though.

I'm wondering how this "blacks out" the background.

I really try to make an impact with
bright on dark a lot of the time.
Usually accomplished by using a
fairly high f-stop and a quick shutter
speed - a little fine tuning in Lightroom
doesn't hurt either.
