very affordable, now that the v2 is out.

You are right - the D7000 has a few more bells and whistles and does have partial magnesium build
but as Mandrake stated - the D5100 and D7000 share a lot of the same features.
Mandrake - I've heard a lot about the dust/oil on the sensor issue with the D600. As you know I had focusing
problems with my D7000 - but it was the lens that was defective so that got repaired by Nikon.
I really do love my D7000 as it is capable of producing wonderful images. For me to invest in an FX model would
require me to experience a real "wow factor" from the results if I tested one. For now the camera(s) I use
produce images that I'm pleased with.

Dale... the 5100 and 7000 both have the same sensor and both have great low light performance.
The 7000, at twice the cost, does however, have numerous advantages.
A quick comparison can be found here, but I would doubt that you haven't seen it.
http://snapsort.com/compare/Ni.....ikon_D7000
(Does "doubt that you haven't" constitute a double negative?)

I shied away from the 7000 at the time of my purchase due to reports of focusing problems.
Now, I would go for the 600 except for reports of dust/oil on the sensor.
The 800 is good except the file sizes are huge requiring a very steady hand or almost constant use of a tripod.
I pretty much know the 5100 so maybe I'll just stick with it for awhile.

Yes... this shot was hand held with a bit of support from something which I don't really remember what.
It was very dark and I am surprised that I was able to get anything.

Sandy's damage in my area was mostly downed trees and wires.
Some of the trees were quite large and it's taking awhile to clear them.

ISO 2000 - Crisp image and great sunstars on the lights!
I have to assume not hand held @ 1/8th second?
The 5100 must be very similar the the 7000 in capabilities.
Both great cameras in my opinion.
One day I will have to go full frame - maybe D600 or newer model when it comes out.
I honestly can't believe they are still cleaning up after Sandy's destruction.
Hope you all never have to face something like that again!!!
