Wow!
I was scrolling down to view your latest posts and enjoyed
the surfers, the breaking waves and the growth on the
rocks and them wham! blinded by the light.
I think you have a problem with the last one.
The other four are really nice so 4 out of 5 is a pretty good
track record.

As for lenses - there is a forum here addressing that issue
and you should see what others have had to say about choices.
And of course - your best bet is to ask Oksana for her advice
on that subject - good luck with your upcoming choices.
Dale.

Here are some other photos i took that day. I dont find these as crisp as the first one. Someday i'll get a better lens to capture those surfers better.

The last one, with the body boarder on the rocks, i like it a lot but obviously it needs some work. This is where my noob-ness comes in, i have no idea what to do with it.

Thanks for the input monkey.

I'm never sure what kind of filter to purchase/use. There are so many! But i can see how the ND filter would help.

I shot this around 5pm. Just before sunset but not quite within that golden hour. The sun would be left of the frame, which is why its brighter there.one of the dificulties i had with this area was that there was sort of a haze or mist caused by the saltwater and rough sea. This caused a few of my photos to look over exposed as the sunlight illuminated that haze. This photo i didn't edit much except taking the exposure down because of this.

I'm in learning mode so im still adapting to these little things that can affect the outcome.

I thought about doing some slow shutter shots in this area, but i didnt have my tripod handy, and i wasnt able to keep too still navigating the rocks on the shore and trying to avoid the waves from sweeping me into the ocean. But i kinda like the still shots i got since it captures the splash of the wave as well as some surfers in the background.

Very cool picture. I also wish I was there. I'm in the Bay Area (Near SF, Calif) and it's cold here.

Good composition ( Good rule of thirds).
What time of the day did you take this picture? It looks a lot brighter on the left side. You get a light blue sky on the left and darker sky on the right.
Perhaps, you could experiment with a ND filter (3 stops) to control some of the brightness if you plan to shoot around noon. This also would help you to use longer shutter speed and give you some cool effect on the water. But all and all a very good picture.

Welcome to the forum.

Love, Monkey

Dale, yup wife just got me the nikon for christmas. The shot was taken with the kit lens. Already saving up for some new glass though. I will probably do a lot of landscape/seascape stuff out here in Maui. Any suggestions on what type of lens i may want to look into? This is Maui, and this is our winter weather. Yeah I know, its pretty rough here.

Mandrake, i think your floor is tilted, that horizon is perfect. JK, i'll make sure to keep an eye on that just for you.

Oksana, thanks for the heads up. And thanks for the tutorial vids and this awesome forum!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I hope to be submitting my pictures often.

Very nice shot. I like that the clear water in the foreground reveals the rocks beneath.
The only suggestion I might make would be to straighten the photo
so that the water horizon line at the left side is horizontal.

We look forward you your positings.
Mandrake

Another Nikon user - welcome aboard.
I see you took this at 18mm so I'm assuming
it was with the kit lens - 18-55mm?
Quite a range of blues to the sky area but good
depth of field and sharp focus.
Wish I was there - it looks like beautiful weather.
Where was the shot taken?
