This is a single adjustment in Photoshop Elements 10. I moved the Levels black slider from 0 to 50.

I think it is an interesting image. I like the bridge and the ships. If you want to improve, you could add a bit more contrast and maybe saturation. It will make it pop more.

My camera is not DSLR but i can setup my shutter speed , F.Stop and ISO but i cannot control the focal length , because the zooming is controlled by a button for zooming in and out , with a fixed lens.
