Photography is a very subjective and personal art. People see things differently and that is what makes a forum like this so valuable. Critiques are a most valuable way to learn and improve. Good or bad you should take whatever you can learn from them and move on. It's not about the attitude, it's about the art. Sometimes we miss the message because we don't appreciate the messenger. If someone comes to tell me there is a missile on the way, I'm not going to care how he tells me but I will act on the message! Anyone who has competed in photography galleries will have had their share of "bad and unfair judges", etc. But you can't let that stop you. I have collected many awards over the years with images that some judges absolutely tore apart. In the end, the only thing that matters how that image makes me feel! Criticism is what you make of it. If you don't like it move on to the next. If it helps you then get to work and learn from it. Keep shooting!

That my friend is a very thoughtful comment. The best thing that helped me learn was being told that my shots sucked, AND WHY!

We often have an emotional attachment to our work, yes that is a cute baby, but its your baby. You heard the thunder of the waves, you got soaked to the skin. A photograph is but one layer of a bigger picture, if we can detach from the smell of the roses and the haunting sound of the loon echoing across a mountain lake I believe we can better focus;) on the message our photographs are trying to convey.

Its easy to get the ooohs and ahhs from the Facebook crowd, and aunty Mavis will be thrilled with any shots of little Jimmy! If you want your shots to stand above the crowd, post em up and ask for critique

Post your shots and keep shooting

Love and peace you guys!

Art is very subjective! And as an artist you have to grow a thick skin. Only the strongest will survive!
Believe me, the technical part is the easiest part. The most difficult part is to find yourself, be different and unique,
create an image which will make people feel something - good or bad. So be happy, when people are willing to critique your image - good or bad.
It means they are not indifferent to them.

And also instructor are not always right (I am not talking about me so, LOL ), because they are too much into all the rules and don't want to come out of the box! I think opinion of the regular people does matter or at least it is good to hear it. You don't have to agree with everything anybody says, but except criticism constructively. If you are planing to work as a photographer, you also might want to research what your target audience likes. Or ones again stay true to yourself and right people will come to you, who like you style. Very often it is not even about your pictures, but about you.
If they like you and your personality, they will like your work too.

We are all here to learn and the more feedback we get the better - good or bad. I like the idea about more constructive criticism - guys, try to explain more why you like or don't like some parts of the image and what would you do to improve it.

Good or bad critiques are welcome because we can think about it and learn from it. We are not babies, so, we must know that when we post something in a public domain to be criticized, we are admiting to receive every kind of critique. Colegues shall give educated critiques, but it doesn't mean they will be positive. If someone says a photo is dark, is because for that person (instructor or not) the photo is, in his oppinion, dark. An artist to be an artist must carry all this. It's a process of growing and learning. It's a human process.

I agree with Oksana a 100%, if you are very sensitive to negative comments towards your work you have no business to be a photographer. You have to figure out what you like more, photography or peoples attention, padding on the back saying how amazing and wonderful you are. I follow a lot of blogs online and come across some photographers that are highly praised, but I think there work is pure crap and there are thousand of other people that think like that, but they found their niche, a type of people that like their work and the only way that they succeeded is by having a very thick skin and sticking to their art. I hear a lot of people saying that photography is an art and very personal. It is an art; but how can it be personal if you put in on the web for millions of people to see? If you want it to be personal keep it to yourself...
