Most people think of The Starry Night as typical of Van Gogh's work. I agree that this painting is a bit of a disappointment.
Some of his paintings, however, are quite good and would probably bring a respectable sum at auction.

I think it is "cool"..... that he signed his paintings "Vincent".
Like we should know who that is.

I agree they would bring a lot of money in an auction, but they are ugly and i dont like them. The money it brings, that i like..
Would i have one on my wall if i could..... NO i would not.

Its called negative space and a lot of photographers do that on purpose. The thing that might not work in this photo as far as composition, the model is cropped a bit on the right which probably would work better with a vertical shot.

vitfoto is right. There are some great Milton Greene shots of Marilyn Monroe using negative space very nicely. Keep up with creative experiments, too many people do the same thing or think photos should look a certain way, that'd be boring. Van Gogh's works were hated and he never received praise until almost immediately before his suicide. Now he is believed to be one of the most important painters in human history.

I think there has to be something in the empty space at the left, even if very faint.
I tried lightening the shadows in the dark area with PSE, but there is nothing there.
Cropping an inch (half of the dark space) does greatly improve the shot, imho.

The problem I've found taking pictures as you did in the one
submitted is - the light is so focused on one area that the rest
of the image is lost. Pros make up for this by using reflectors and
different types of lighting to bring back the shadow areas and give
the overall look a more realistic and pleasing appearance. Lovely
daughter, and a good sport. My kids would tell me to take a hike if
I asked them to pose while I experimented on lighting etc. lol.
It was inside the house, during sunset through a window, i had only a little square of light, told my daughter to get in it quickly and this is what came out. I think it's a pretty picture but is there too much black (half the pic) or should i simply keep her and crop the rest.
