Of cause it all depends what you are going for, but in most situations it all about the eyes, they are usually a focal point. Try to play with different lightening situation. Strait on flash is not your best option. I would anchorage everybody to take their own pictures and see if things are working or not. This way you become better in photographing others. I will make a video about self portrait very soon.
