I do find the effects of the cool breeze in your last photo a bit provocatively distracting which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Do you own a flash unit? If it's sunny, I always use it to fill in shadows slightly. Careful of the backgrounds...don't allow them to be complicated and overpower the main subjects.  Like the early light on them though.
