I have not a Nikon5100 but a Nikon D3200. My first electronic flash was a Metz Mecablitz 36 AF-5. But I was not for 100% satisfied so I sold this one and bought the Metz Mecablitz 44 AF-1. This one was better but... And now I have the perfect combination and I am very pleased with it. The Nikon SB 910, the really perfect combination with a Nikon camera. Oke the flash is expensive but you get the best combination in any circumstances.

Hi chasmz. I know you're looking at dedicated flash units. But with a little creativity and DIY spirit, you can try pushing the boundaries of your camera's built-in flash for very little cost.

Take a look! DIY Popup Flash Softbox

Once you have a dedicated flash, you can get even more creative with all sorts of DIY projects such as this -- a giant softbox or a smaller one, both for very little money.

In this way, you can test out these things to find out if you'd like them enough to spend more money on one built professionally. Plus, it's fun! Check it out!

I've read that they are good, but expensive. Go for it.
(Do you know what you're doing in manual mode?)

I think that you can't without a external flash if you make photos indoor. I try always to make the best photo that's possible and without flash and less light circumstances a photo without flash has more noise than with flash.

I've a Nikon D3200 and in the beginning I have a Metz mecablitz 44 AF-1, but I am not for 100% satisfied with it. So I want to by a Nikon SB700. I have seen several tutorials on You-tube and I think this is the best combination.

The intricacies of flash photography are probably the most difficult to understand.

My advice to you now is to fully learn what your camera can do and become totally proficient with non-flash photography.

As to your questions... If I were you, I would not trust buying a second hand flash. Even if you tried it out, you would not know what to look for to see if it was all working properly.

Second question... I have no idea of the number of flashes one might expect. If it is 10,000 that would probably be enough for me. Do you expect to need more?

Thanks for the recommendations Sir Mandrake and Sir Dale...

Actually I do not know how to use flash..

I already watched lesson 26 but I cant apply it.

Im actually a newbie.. just got my camera just a month ago.

I just notice with the group I join. That all of them have flash unit.

May I just ask.. is it okay to purchase 2nd hand flash?

Does flash also have bulb cycle? for example I can only use flash for 10,000 times and after 10,000 the flash will worn-out much faster or something like that.

Thank you..

chasmz... I gotta agree with Dale.

I hardly ever use any flash and, for the few times that I have, the pop-up on my D5100 worked just fine.

If you think you must have one, consider the inexpensive SB-400. Costs about a hundred US bucks.

The most expensive that I would consider would be the SB-700 as discussed above.

flash unless I was making a living at photography. A relatively

Just my opinion for what it's worth and hope you enjoy the one you choose!

None, have you use much linterna to go around? is true and a joke, any flash with universal contac is good to ruin a photo.
