I think you've improved on the first b/w image by keeping the background flat. You are absolutely right
that it takes playing around with highlights and shadows to get to where you want to be and in your last
image my eye goes directly to the sailor and the highlights/shadows surrounding him. The soft background
works really well here. I think it's really damned good!

I would love to be able to make a book one day featuring both colour and B&W images of the
same subjects to demonstrate how much difference can be seen simply by removing
the colours. Just like the one you posted above!

Well, "removing the colours" is not really the same as using the Lr black and white presets.
Below is the same color image with the colors removed in PSE. It is a bit flat in my opinion.
It takes some trial and error in Lr to see which B&W preset you will like best. In this case, for me, it was "Look #1".
After that you might still want to make further adjustments. Good luck with the book. It should be fun.

The B&W image is great. I'm really starting to get into b&w (converted from colour} because
in a lot of cases the image turns out so much more dramatic when finished processing.
I would love to be able to make a book one day featuring both colour and B&W images of the
same subjects to demonstrate how much difference can be seen simply by removing
Did you try b&w background to highlight the main subject more?
Just a thought.

Gave it a try. This is Lightroom's B&W Look 1 preset. I do like it better.

I must thank you again for your kind words about my flickr account.
I do recommend flickr to all members of the forum.
There is now a free terabyte available for digital photographs and video.
That's a lot of bytes. 1,099,511,627,776 as I calculate it.

You asked if I had tried a black and white background for my sailor man.
No, I haven't, but may well give it a try at your suggestion.

I did take a look at your Flickr account and you have posted a lot of pics that give us an idea of
what your life is like at the moment. Some highlights for me - pics of your grandson playing football are
great (and I know they were posted a while back) Cap't Wino is a classic winner and sailor man is definitely
cool! There's so many more that I can't take the space to mention but you have posted a lot of really wonderful images.
