Welcome to the forum. I must disagree that children photos should always be brighter. It is more standard approach, but it all depends on your style and the mood you want in your picture.

You also have to take in consideration, what the same image will look different on different screens, special if they are not calibrated. I always hate how bright images look on my iPhone compare to my calibrated screen.

They are not underexposed dark, but overall the image just has a darker tone to it but everything is sharp. Hard to explain without posting examples but I do not want to post others' work without permission. Do you like Image A or B better?
