Mandrake
This diary is truly a piece of history! Written at the time when you lost one of the
greatest American Presidents. The accompanying short film is remarkable just to
see that photo journalists were taking crude (but history making) photographs of
important events of the day. I'm amazed at the clarity of some of these photographs
given the way an image was reproduced and the time needed to get the image to
transfer.
Remarkable post Mandrake - definitely worthy of a long view from everybody on Easy Exposure!!!
Dale.

I'll end this series with these pages from the diary.
Following Appomattox, Co. B, 189th Regiment marched to Washington where they took part in the Grand Review.
On the first day of this march, April 15, 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated.
His Vice President, Andrew Johnson assumed the office.

Below are some photos of the review. Obviously not mine.

This must have been what my great-grandfather was referring to when
he wrote that he "saw the President and all the head men".
President Johnson is just left of center in the first row of the reviewing stand.

I must say they had pretty nice diary books in 19 century. Did you read it all?

Yes, Oksana, I've read it all. Several times.
I once did a paper on it which tied in specific entries with known historic facts.

That trip would definitely be something to think about. Have you had anyone look at this piece
of history to give an assessment of it's importance and possible value (obviously priceless to you).
It is something that is so unusual and in such seemingly very good condition considering the age.
You own some pieces that are to say the least out of the ordinary and I would think extremely
collectible and valuable.
Dale.

This is so cool Mandrake! Have you been to Appomattox?

No, I haven't. I think I might be disappointed.
Next year will be the 150th anniversary. Maybe I should go then.

Yes, I have the diary. I took this shot yesterday.
My great-grandfather was in Co. B of the 189th Regiment NY Infantry.
He was at Appomattox on this day and described what happened.
There are other interesting pages in the diary, but this is certainly the most important.

While he survived the war, he died eight years after on November 5, 1873, but not before marrying.
Fortunate for me.

If what you have posted is an actual page from a diary written almost 150 years ago
with the mention of Grant and Lee and a surrender... that's a pretty incredible thing to be in possession of!
What also makes it an important date is - April 9th is also my birthday!!!
However, I was born almost a century after this ink was put to paper.
Dale.
