I didn't go 3/4 but just retook the shots just a few degrees off center... I like it better. The manipulation in photoshop took much less time the second time around. . Yes, mandrake, I did do some resizing... my wife's head a little bigger and my son's a little smaller... also rotated each picture a little so it appears we are all looking at the same shot... and my 13 year old son took the shot of me. I think this looks better...

Yes, I think 3/4 profile shots might work well.

The composite is a great (although not easy) way of getting all in focus with 85mm at f/3.2.
I doubt there would be sufficient dof to do it in one shot. Everything is very sharp this way.

Plus, I'm guessing that you did some resizing in Photoshop to get the somewhat counterintuitive graduated head sizes.
The effect is perfect for the photo and of course, would not be possible in a single shot.

Have fun.

Yes, it is three pictures against some black felt that I combined in photoshop... I used a construction light I had for the lighting as i don't yet have a flash. Also did some spot healing... after I was done, I thought I should have taken the shots a little off 90 degrees so that you could see a little more of the eyes - maybe I'll try it again since the felt is still hanging

Three pictures? Then this is a composite?
Most unusual. Did you do the post processing as well?
Great work... I'm sure you're having much fun with the 600.
